To begin my personal statement I would like to use a poem written by Robert Frost, Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening. What this poem means to me is that, in the forest of life, sometimes we need to stop. We need to think. We need to breathe in the piney air. We need to consider the next step in our lives. Should I cross the overpass and enter into the J. Reuben Law School? Or should I stay in these woods forever? I have the inescapable urge to do a headstand. The woods to me symbolize a type of comfort zone. Sometimes life necessitates a certain amount...a step out of our comfort zone into a more challenging realm of being. The being of being a lawyer. Do I love my comfort zone? Yes. Would I like to stay here indefintely? Of course. But that doesn't earn any money in today's world. Did I feel like I had a choice in where to go to law school? Only to the extent that I wanted to disobey God's commandments. Did I read Law School Confidential? Yes, last night. Am I scared to go? Kind of. Do you guys want me to go to law school or not? If you let me in, I will go. As Nephi once said, "I will go and do..." and I think this applies here. There are the woods and then there is the snow. Who wants to be left out in the cold? Certainly, not me, even though it's so hot right now. But the weather will change, as life changes, and as I will change from a student of law to a practitioner with a juris doctorate degree garnishing my official title. Hannah Graves, attorney at law. This is what I yearn to be. Actually, I yearn to be Hannah Kingman-Graves if only my apostate boyfriend and I could come to a happy agreement on religion and get married. Because I love him. And I love the law. And I want to learn the law of love alongside the love of law. There are movers and then there are shakers. There are only 9 shakers left. I have no choice, then, but to be a mover. I solemnly choose to be the mover in today's world by entering the class of 2009 and by excelling and leaving the woods into my "log cabin" of a new world--the J. Reuben Law School of BYU, the Lord's University here on earth, as it is in heaven. Amen.
